range County Fire Rescue crews doused the flames after a fire broke out in the dome of Pirate's Dinner Adventure near International Drive on Monday afternoon.
Two employees were inside at the time, and one was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. The two-alarm fire started about 2:40 p.m.
“We had heavy black smoke coming through the top of the dome,” said Orange County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Brett Wasmund. “They did have a significant amount of heat on the inside, so we deployed several different hose lines to control the heat of the fire.”
Wasmund said crews had to use different firefighting tactics because the building has a dome.
“In Orange County, we have a lot of unique structures, so we are constantly adapting to meet the challenges,” he said.
The dinner theater is at 6400 Carrier Drive, between International Drive and Universal Boulevard. It was closed and undergoing repairs after Hurricane Irma ripped off its dome roof last year. Shows were slated to resume by the end of May.
More than 200 employees were laid off after the storm damage. The management team previously told the Orlando Sentinel they hope to rehire them.
Skyler Rankin, marketing director, said the theater hopes to overcome the latest setback.
“We’ve done it before. We can do it again,” he said. “We don’t know the extent of the damage yet, but once we get those details, we can talk about coming up with another opening date. We’re just thankful everyone got out safely.”
