The 20th annual Gay Days event is taking place in Walt Disney and other Orlando theme parks or tourist spots this week. This year’s Gay Days takes place June 1 – June 7, 2010.
The unofficial gathering – of gays and lesbians, families and friends – at Walt Disney World and other theme parks, the weeklong event celebrate community and a deep appreciation for the best in Orlando vacation destinations.
Gay Days is expected to attract more than 140,000 guests throughout the week, at more than 40 citywide events, including an estimated 40,000 – 50,000 participants at the Magic Kingdom on Saturday. Activities include a range of events: pool parties, comedy events, film festivals, as well as events for women and bears.
Visiting the Magic Kingdom on the first Saturday in June is the signature event for Gay Days, as that theme park served as the site for the original, single day event when Gay Days started in 1991. The Magic Kingdom gathering always takes place the first Saturday in June.
Many Gay Days attendees – members of the GLBT community, family, and friends – identify themselves by wearing red t-shirts throughout the week, particularly on Saturday when attendees visit Magic Kingdom. Participants and supporters are encouraged to "Wear Red and Be Seen.” One of the highlights of the Magic Kingdom gathering is the afternoon parade, featuring a sea of red shirts.
Walt Disney World does not sponsor Gay Days, although the resort and its Cast Members are generally supportive of the event and its participants.
