ORLANDO -- Michael Jackson’s 1986 musical film, “Captain EO,” is coming back to Walt Disney World this summer.

Thomas Smith, social media director for Disney Parks, made the announcement Wednesday on the Disney Parks Blog.

The classic 3-D film reopened in February at Disneyland in California, in Tomorrowland.

Here in Central Florida, the 17-minute, musical space-fantasy adventure film will hit the screen July 2 at Epcot, where it first debuted 24 years ago.

In the film, Jackson plays the role of a spaceship captain who uses love and music to fight a witch.

“I remember enjoying ‘Captain EO’ during its original run at Epcot from 1986–1994. But for some of you, it’ll be a new experience,” said Smith. “The film features Michael Jackson as ‘Captain EO’ and a crew of Disney-created space characters. During their journey, the group uses the power of dance, light and music to turn a colorless planet into a world of color and happiness.”

Popular interest in Jackson’s 3-D Disney film resurged in 2009 following the pop icon’s death.

“Captain EO” closed at Epcot in 1994, and was replaced with another 3-D short film, “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience!”

That attraction closed at Disneyland to make way for the return of “Captain EO,” and the same could likely happen at Epcot.

“Captain EO” is also returning to Disney’s international theme parks. It’s scheduled to open at Disneyland Paris on June 12, and Tokyo Disneyland on June 30.
